Just when I thought my life was almost Microsoft-free …

My college has switched its PCs from having a PDF-writer installed to something called ‘Microsoft XPS Document Writer’. LibreOffice doesn’t know the file format, and can’t find any previous posts about it here.

Any thoughts on this, anyone? (No, I can’t change colleges.)

OpenXPS info

Open XML Paper Specification (also referred to as OpenXPS), is an open specification for a page description language and a fixed-document format originally developed by Microsoft as XML Paper Specification (XPS) that was later standardized by Ecma International as international standard ECMA-388. It is an XML-based (more precisely XAML-based) specification … (Wikipedia)

In simple terms these are ZIP files with XML files inside, much like OOXML (DOCX), or ODF. It is however, as you indicate, a format targeted more at PDF. The first Wikipedia page lists several options for opening these files. You don’t mention your platform.

XPS is essentially a MS

XPS is essentially a MS inspired alternative for PDF. LO can easily export PDF but does not really open PDF (makes a stab at importing into Draw). Word 2010 also can export PDF but can’t read it. Word can’t read XPS either, but it can export it, so I think you are expecting a little too much of Writer to open XPS files.

XPS can be viewed in various views (Evince and Okula spring to mind for Linux Gnome and KDE respectively)

Linux Mint 15 LibreOffice 4.1.1.2 : OpenSUSE 12.3 LibreOffice 4.0.3
