Changing color schemes in libre office

had the same problem: the only solution I've found was to switch Ubuntu's theme to Clearlooks or something equivalent (pale, anyway).

Well what worked for me, although might sound crazy but things are like this some times, I had to re-install the two languages I am using in my system ( greek english). 

After the re-installation everything worked fine.

I've experienced this problem on my box and another one freshly installed. Since I foresee installing a few others, I'll keep your suggestion in mind and let you (everybody) know what happens with those.

As a new user, particularly because of the attractive layout in Writer, I was amazed that most items have disappeared when opening a new document. There seems to be no ready way to get Font, Highlight and Background color palates back again. Searching through that long menu in View>Toolbars, each one having to be switched on then off, is a pain, with no joy at the end! The meaning, too, of several words is just mysterious in English. Give us a clear message what you are trying to do. And, ideally, the option of the old or the new. Fundamental design changes in Writer without guidance is asking for user failure. By all means innovate and be different. But don't switch the lights out on us, leaving no candle! I still cannot discover the 3 palates in the dark! Can you reveal the secret, please?

Every time I insert a shape in a document, its background color ("area") is Blue 8 and I have to change it to white. Is there a way to make white the default color for all shapes' backgrounds (BTW the same applies to lines, fonts etc.)?
